My husband, Andrew, co-directed Pressing On: A Letterpress Documentary with Erin Beckloff. It’s been 3 years in the making and now it’s running the theater circuit. Friday Andrew asked if I wanted to go to the Chicago Premiere. (Honestly? Who could turn down an evening in Chicago!) I’m thrilled to go! However, as the wife of the co-director I believe that I need to make a statement at every premiere.
Since this is so last minute, I wanted to share my process for How to Prepare for a Last Minute Getaway. This can apply to weekend trips as well.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: THINK ABOUT THE EVENT
Is there an event that you’re attending? You’re going to be meeting people, so you might as well stand out! I believe that this is the most important look that you’ll have in your suitcase, so plan for this first and every clothing decision for the rest of the trip will be a breeze.
SECONDLY THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE GOING
My stylist friend, Spencer (you can find him on Instagram @the_s_squared.) Prepares and provides items and advice, for the concept that I’m going for. It will coincide with the particular location. For Nashville’s premiere we decided on a modern day Loretta Lynn classic country music look. Since Chicago is a last minute plan we decided on something easier and sooooo Chicago. (I’m not ready to spill the beans on this look yet, so I’ll continue to use my Nashville look as an example.)
Think about accessories that compliment your outfit. You may not need a lot, but if you’re dressing simple go for big statement necklaces and rings. Chunky bangles and bracelets are my personal favorite, but sometimes they don’t always go with my look. There’s a time a place for everything, just don’t have everything at once. In Nashville I wore an all red gown and a chunky turquoise necklace. (Shout out to Grandma Blake for knowing my turquoise obsession.) The turquoise and red looked beautiful together!
Right now, it’s autumn. You always want to know what is up and coming in the fashion world for the following season. Pay attention to the color that will be popular in the spring. Like a shark, you always have to keep moving forward.
ENJOY YOUR TIME:
In the autumn everyday wear, I absolutely love to wear denim jeans and Harley boots. Jeans can honestly go with anything, it’s all about what top and shoes you pair with them. It’s all about comfort for me at this time. In the summer, packing dresses is an easy fix for your get up and go vacation.
I hope this was helpful! I love sharing my work and experiences with you all. If you’d like to talk more about Sessions/Travel/Fashion please leave me a comment in the contact page. Happy Trails!
